Fa pocs dies el primer ministre escocès, Alex Salmond, anunciava arreu que en un parell de setmanes presentaria un document on proposava la realització d´un referèndum d´autodeterminació; fet que resultava prou previsible ja que era, en gran part, la proposta de govern del SNP (Partit Nacional Escocès).
La reacció internacional de la premsa ha estat prou contradictòria, d´una banda alguns mitjans de comunicació han decidit no fer cap tipus de ressò, mentre que d´altres de seguida han aprofitat per mostrar-ho com un gran pas per a la nació escocesa, allò cert és que als carrers d´Edimburg la vida segueix el seu curs sense prestar massa cas a aquestes declaracions, però és que no és el primer cop en què es pregunta als escocesos pel seu futur.A L´actual parlament d´Escòcia data de 1999, any en què els laboristes (el partit de Tony Blair) van decidir restablir cert grau d´autonomia per la nació escocesa amb l´objectiu d´afeblir les seves reivindicacions nacionals.
Tot i aixÃ, el debat sobre si Escòcia hauria de tenir autonomia es remunta anys enrere, concretament l´any 1978 es va redactar l´anomenada Scotland Act 1978, que tornava a Escòcia molts dels seus drets. Un any després es va realitzar un referèndum per decidir si s´hauria d´implantar, però amb una condició per part del govern de Westminster, que havia d´Ã©sser ratificada per més d´un 40% de l´electorat, que en un paÃs on gairebé la meitat de la població és abstencionista i poc interessada en la polÃtica, resultava una impossibilitat prà ctica.
Tot i que la majoria de votants es van decantar per tornar a Escòcia algun tipus d´autonomia, finalment no arribaren a ser suficients perquè el resultat fos acceptat pel govern de Westminster i amb l´arribada de Thatcher al poder aquest procés s ´aturà de manera completa. La desconfiançaMentre que alguns representats polÃtics d´altres nacions sense estat han aplaudit l´Alex Salmond, en el seu paÃs no ha trobat tan bona rebuda a la seva proposta. D´una banda els partits laborista, conservador i liberal demòcrata han mostrat el seu rebuig davant aquesta proposta que al·legava que es tracta d´un malgast de temps i diners, mentre que d´altra banda el Partit Socialista Escoces (SSP) tampoc s´ha mostrat massa alegre davant aquestes declaracions, en la opinió de Catriona Grant, candidata de l´SSP per Edimburg "el més segur és que no es realitze cap referèndum d´autodeterminació, i en cas que es realitzés seria en condicions antidemocrà tiques (...)
Salmond no té la majoria suficient per engegar aquest procés". I és que l´SNP tan sols té 47 escons en un parlament de 129, dels quals tan sols els Verds escocesos estan disposats a portar a terme aquest referèndum, amb tan sols 2. Però les critiques del SSP van molt més enllà . Record de James ConnollyNo sorprèn gaire descobrir que els orÃgens del famós revolucionari irlandès es troben al casc antic d´Edimburg, de fet amb la formació del nou parlament escocès i el creixement d´una consciència nacional escocesa els treballadors recuperen la figura d´aquest excepcional socialista que durant els seus primers 20 anys de vida, va viure i treballar a Escòcia. Tot i que els seus textos més famosos sempre van ser referents a la nació irlandesa, pel fet d´Ã©sser sotmesos al mateix estat, molt d´ells són perfectament aplicables al cas escocès.
És més, la gent del SSP ara recorda el famós escrit Socialisme i nacionalisme on deia "si bandejau l´exèrcit anglès demà i hissau la bandera verda sobre el castell de DublÃn, a no ser que començau a organitzar la república socialista els vostres esforços seran debades. Anglaterra encara us governaria. Us governaria a través dels seus capitalistes, a través dels seus terratinents, a través dels seus financers, a través de tota la xarxa d´institucions individualistes i mercantilistes que ha plantat en aquest paÃs i regat amb les llà grimes de les nostres mares i la sang dels nostre mà rtirs".I és que de fet tot i que polÃticament puga semblar que Escòcia pertany al parlament de Westminster, i que amb la proposta de l´SNP podria passar a pertà nyer als escocesos, la cosa es ben diferent.
Al nord d´Escòcia es troba el 90% de les reserves de petroli europees, estan controlades per corporacions dels Estats Units, Alemanya i Londres, que paguen menys impostos a Escòcia que els que han de pagar a altres països com l´Arà bia Saudita o Mèxic, ni imaginar de comparar-ho amb un cas com podria ser Veneçuela. Al mateix temps la terra d´Escòcia es troba en mans d´un petit reducte de grans terratinents, molts d´ells excèntrics estrangers sense cap interès per la vida dels pobladors d´aquestos terrenys.
La proposta de Salmond i l´SNP no consisteix en cedir aquestos terrenys en una Escòcia independent als treballadors i pujar els impostos a les empreses estrangeres que exploten els seus recursos naturals, la seva proposta és copiar el model de la República d´Irlanda, és a dir, impostos Ãnfims i poca inversió en el sector public. Una altra de les grans crÃtiiques que l´SSP fa al SNP i el seu model d´Escòcia independent és la falta de voluntat de reformular les actuals lleis que regulen l´activitat sindical del Regne Unit, aquestes lleis que van ser imposades pel partit Conservador als anys 80 amb la clara intencionalitat d´aturar els moviments dels obrers. A dia d´avui són les mes repressives de tot Europa, impossibiliten el correcte desenvolupament de drets tan bà sics com el de realitzar una vaga.
L´SNP que en els últims anys ha presumit de trobar-se a l´esquerra dels laboristes encara no ha emprat la seva influència per intentar millorar en absolut el nivell de benestar dels treballadors i els seu dret a organitzar-se, d´altra banda el que si que ha fet és millorar les condicions perquè grans corporacions i multimilionaris puguen fer tot allò que desitgen.
